Venice Under Glass

The premise of the rejected category is of course that genius frequently goes unrewarded and undiscovered. This, however, has somewhat changed, the internet and self publishing business providing an excellent forum for writers to prove their worth; in a sense the closest to a meritocracy we've ever been.

Take the case of Stephen J. Harper (probably not the Prime Minister of Canada, but I wouldn't bet on it....), Author of "Venice Under Glass", who took it upon himself to respond in person to the less than glorious reviews of his detective story enacted by stuffed animals in Venice. To give any more away would be to spoil the fun, read the review first, and then scroll to follow the author's trolling commentary...

Orgone Accumulator

Initially discredited due to Wilhelm Reich's preoccupation with sex, I'm sensing that the Orgone Accumulator's are due for a comeback. If only as a meditation or isolation chamber, but then again, there may be something to the idea of alternating layers of wood/(insulators) and metal, think of a high-voltage capacitor or early battery jar, and the idea that this might "store up" some sort of electricity which in turn positively affects the human body, well, my medical  knowledge is limited enough that I just might believe it. A bit of science would go a long ways towards proving things, but as with most fringe projects the elements of science and empirical testing seem to be sadly lacking. And why ruin the fun? Add a few magnets and crystals, a pyramid shaped top, a secret door or sub-basement that would allow it to be used in magic shows and seances, all of which would further improve it's credibility. I can't be the only one seeing the potential here...

Still, it's a remnant from Reich's "cult of sex and anarchy", and as such can only improve my social life, the list of references in literature (the testimonial of William S. Burroughts, for example) serve to enhance it's prestige...

Note: Since it'll probably be a while before I get this cabinet making business up and running (I'm thinking Kootenays, retirement), here are some images should you choose to build your own...

Complaints: Tino

Now I've long since left the hated restaurant, tossing in mediocre money and long hours for poor money and relatively short hours. A fair swap, as far as I'm concerned. But I'm still in touch with my former co-workers, and my last 2 landlords have both continued to work there. Over Thanksgiving dinner with G his brother brings up the story of Tino, a new waiter, old waiter about town, classical 50's greaser, hair and appearance, and incidentally Italian, reminding you of no-one so much as a failed Vinnie Barbarino, trapped in a fashion that went the way of the dinosaur some 40 odd years ago...

Anyways, G gets a call from a customer looking to speak to the manager. G identifies himself as the manager. The customer then goes on to explain that he's noted a certain waiter pissing behind the restaurant....not once, but several times.

This in what passes for "fine dining" in Calgary.

G promises to address it, speaks to Tino, issue done. This isn't even remotely the most ridiculous letter of complaint they've ever had....
