Election Time

And we're gearing up again for yet another federal election, with not a single candidate, howsoever hopeless, worth voting for. Yet again we're forced to vote against the least of several evils.

As part of any good election there's plenty of media coverage, trying to whip an indifferent public into showing up at the polling stations. No one I've met is all that interested. The CBC is especially amusing, with their animated discussions of the virtues and privilege of voting, touching stories, and of course implicit Liberal agenda.

And there are the phone calls, automated "robots" that start with a long pause, then kick in and with that peculiar echo common to recordings try to anonymously determine how we'll vote: "Press 1 for the Green Party......Press 2 for the..."

The results will be later quoted in newspapers to tell us who's leading the election; what they won't tell us is that only senile imbeciles, confirmed idiots and lonely masturbators will stay on the line long enough to actually "vote" and so the predictions (and later results) will be heavily skewed towards idiocy.

But it's election time, they always are.

Tubby Dog

Working tomorrow, so IFN with the boy has been moved forwards to today.

As there are no films I'm especially dieing to see (none, at least, released in Calgary) we instead opt to go for dinner. Someplace new, and so I have the idea to try out the The Coup on 17th Avenue, a vegetarian restaurant I've heard good things about.

Unfortunately they're closed on Mondays.

So we wander back down 17th Avenue until we come to Tubby Dog, another restaurant I've heard much about but not yet tried. The very antithesis, if ever there was one, of The Coup.

Now lets be fair, it's a dressed up hot-dog stand, with "gourmet" hot dogs. Decor, interesting, Prices: Good, portions: Large, Yam Fries and Onion rings, tasty. The hot dogs, while well dressed were, well, so-so. But their market isn't the 6:00 diners, it's the 2:00 AM drunkards staggering home after the bar, so lets be fair - for them it's excellent.

The boy, he has a problem getting his hot-dog out of it's chili bath and ends up dropping huge globs of chili and cheese and coleslaw all over the table. We banter about the possibilities of him becoming the enfant-terrible of the food-critic world, dining in restaurants and then signing his name in the swath of spilled leftovers that mark his presence, and we laugh at the possible reviews: "It sure looked good, if only I could have gotten some to my mouth..." or "I really like Vietnamese food but never really learned how to use chopsticks...".

Maybe it was just me laughing.

Tubby Dog: Overall good, but the hot-dogs are no big deal. Delicious Yam Fries and Onion Rings though. Worth trying once, not sure I'll ever go back. Certainly not sober anyways.

at the Hillhurst Good Samaritan Rummage Sale

I'm at the Hillhurst-Good Samaritan Rummage sale, and it's looking good. I've filled a bag with antique rosaries, jewelry, buttons, priced at perhaps a couple of dollars a bag, and I'm going from room to room, there are no end to treasures here...and there's an upstairs and another upstairs as well, and the prices are incredibly good when I realize that I haven't checked the watches and everything has already been marked down and I think that the dealers must have already beaten me to it and I run upstairs...already they are putting things into storage and I discover that the dealers haven't been to this room yet, and I have them pull down all sorts of treasures, there are antique clocks and old watches - and I hastily grab one, complicated movement, moonphase, and it opens to reveal yet another watch inside and inside of this there are more and it's watches as far as you can open them...and there's a Greek bust and there are antique wooden pieces of furniture and ornaments, and the staff are annoyed that I'm there so late, I'm buying everything I can lay my hands upon and no sooner do the bags fill than they seem to disappear and there are others that must be filled....time is running out...

Image: UFO's out my window

And from the office, where I sit writing this, I can catch a view of our new alien overlords hovering above the nearby school.

Possibly the Tibetan gongs I acquired a couple of years ago hanging on the curtain rod, but as I'm far too lazy to investigate we'll just have to chalk it up as yet another of life's inexplicable mysteries....
