Come and See
The last movie downloaded on my phone, but an absolute Masterpiece.
A Soviet "Anti-War" film it follows a young conscript after he joins the resistance against German Occupation in Belarus.
Visually spectacular, amazing choreography, casting, acting, cinematography - it takes an entirely different view on war than most Western films - there are no heroes, only victims standing in the midst of surreal and horrifying circumstance. While I've read abundant descriptions and books that take the same tack, I've yet to see it realized as successfully as this in film.
6/5 Stars, a "Must-See".

Above Kaslo
Sunday night, drive up to new road above Kaslo. High up, had done some research, now time to check it out.
25 or so KM of logging roads - the geology, exactly the same as Crystal Mountan, abundant dirty & rusty quartz, metamorphic shales, Monday morning I find I actually had been up here before, or close enough, a rave (the one with the lunatic on acid)...
Check it all out. Off the road there is nothing, but there are mines - and amazing views - another 15 KM further up, but this has to be done hiking, and so now I've got to plan for some water and a long evening hike up the mountain...
Later, later in the summer, there are too many other places I have to get back to...

Fruit Flies Age Faster After Witnessing Death

In brief, fruit flies that have witnessed or been in the presence of other dead fruit flies will age faster than fruit flies that have not. And - for reasons yet unknown, fruit flies that have been exposed to death are thereafter avoided or shunned by those of their brethren that have not witnessed death.
If the simple psychology of a fruit fly can have that kind of reaction to death or trauma, what then of people?
And, while on the surface unrelated it reminds me how once Hollywood established the convention that people fall down dead when they've been shot, and people have been doing that ever since (when in fact chances are you've got a fair bit of life in you yet...).
