Vacation (2) - South

And a few pictures from the trip down south with the daughter, sadly a bust, she wore only hotpants, I brought no sweater or pot to cook dinner in ("When I was a kid we never ate when we were camping..." I tell her, she wasn't reassured... "Consider it a Vision Quest..."). And I overestimated, all in all, the amount of prospecting I could do with her along, overall, she bore it, but there were meltdowns and in future I think I'll have to confine my interests to hers, she's amply indulged mine, if the weather clears I can do this on my own...

Twin Forks. Free, empty campground, much abused by the local quadding contingent...

Beautiful sunset...

And a peculiar infestation of iridescent blue beetles, at first thought they were some rare twilight flower, upon closer inspection (see meltdown & hotpants...)

Mushrooms

And these, all over our campsite, Pembina Forks on the Trunk Road.

Treasure, if I only knew which ones were edible, I would guess the one nibbled by the chipmunk, but I'd also probably die pretty quick...

Ram Falls

Very cool fossiliferous shales. The daughter loved, as she likes fossils...

Everywhere mountain goats, hamming it up for the photographer with a zoom lens and remedial skill. Not me.

Peace River

And a couple of days in Peace River, a fine campsite, free, only 10 minutes from the Lions Campsite in Peace River, a sordid affair filled with RV's, children running around in wet nappies, no trees unless you count the weeds which were over 3 feet tall, no room for trees with all the RV"s and trailers, an empty campsite backing onto a pile of trash, garbage bags, discarded benches, this a paid site, it reminded me of a San Paulo ghetto, we took our chances and drove 10 KM up the road...

This was free, and we had it all to ourselves.

12 Foot Davis, read more on him here: http://mightypeace.com/places/sights-experiences/12-foot-davis-site/ & here: http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/henry-fuller-davis/

The museum, small, filled with local rocks, fossils, artifacts, small but well worth the $2.00 admission, if only to whet my appetite for the treasures we wouldn't be finding...

A tugboat ferry, classic...

And the view:

A misty morning. There were 10 thousand of these photos on the way to Grande Prairie, the thick fog cutting the visibility, foreshortened horizons, fields of corn, vast farms, and no people..."Don't pay the ferryman...". Not to worry, in Alberta it's free...

A reasonable detour past a washed out road.

And passing a merry spaceman. Just because it's northern Alberta...
