So, made the Nephew close and found myself at Literary Death Match. All sold out. Wait around 10, 15 minutes, get a last minute ticket, whew, I'm in...
Careful what you wish for...
Amusing, but not so, glad I'm saw it but don't think I'd see it again. Authors, by dress and appearances, appear to be largely a homeless lot, while all were clearly good, even very good at their craft, this was largely about performance. And here they all did well too, only expecting authors to perform is a little like expecting integrity out of lawyers, clearly it's not their job, if they have it, great, if they don't maybe they still have merit. So, all in all, a silly night out, really didn't have to see it but I did and I'll know better for next time. Readings would have been just fine...

SO in lieu of theatrical offerings found a local burlesque show to attend tonight. Good, a couple of the dancers exceptional, real beauty, older (and being older I prefer to see beauty a little closer my age...something just wrong about admiring 20 year old girls...), an adequate comedic magician MC who competently executes a variety of tricks I know, this, in itself, I hate, as I prefer to seriously and very incompetently attempt my wizardry with conjuring, thunder, and dragons, but grudgingly credit where credit is due, not my thing, but since he managed to finish most of his tricks without everybody guessing I guess he's got me beat...
And more dancers, sexy fare, stripteases leaving a bit to the imagination, and real women, not flawless but beautiful women, and it's been a long while ...
The venue, well, thanks for hosting, but it's a shame to see talent so marginalized in shithole makeshift theaters in dire bars and pubs, really, If I ever find diamonds my first charity will be the arts community of Calgary, this city really needs a heart and soul ... and the crowd, perhaps 40, 50 people, mostly friends of the performers, recognizing a few of them from some of Calgary's darker alternative venues, Kink Nights, a bit sad that in a city of a million the entire alternative community comprises a mere 40 or 50 people, on a good, great, night, maybe a hundred or two. But that's Calgary.

AN early night at work, and so a pleasant break from the usual round of bars and nightclubs - The Loose Moose Theatre Company, Missed Connections, Improvisations sketched upon the most recently posted Craigslist ads. Highly amusing, and I was pleased to see well attended, they deserve that.

Tonight, night off, first Theatre Grand production, for me, of the Season, ISOLDE, a contemporization of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde, curious language, at times difficult to follow, but in the end worthwhile. Worthwhile, perhaps, because it's addressing issues in which I can find some relevance and corollaries, relevant to me...
Afterwards, hor d'oeuvres and wine served upstairs, hob-nob with the patrons and sponsors, the actors and actress, a lot of people I recognize, a couple I speak to, she knows me, I only recognize her husband, but can't place either, the house party at Martins' in Brittania, nope, I want to ask "Martin the Crack Dealer?" but a distant and better part of me intuits this is inappropriate...
Theatre Grand, the best theatre crowd in Calgary, the best performances, without a doubt, the most "Theatrical" or "Artistic" of any of the groups in Calgary, the crowd reflects this, theatre is not dead, it merely needs relevance and reinventing, and dollar for dollar they're doing it. A good night out.
