Suicide by Cop

People were worried that he might harm or kill himself, so they called the cops..

Well...I rather doubt that they helped the situation, but when have they ever?

It's time to disarm the police.

Insecure

And, now having been back in the great city of Calgary for almost 2 months I've noticed a few disturbing trends. This is one of them.

Private security guards, ubiquitous, some armed, some not, in private shops. In the Co-op, the liquor stores, Value Village even, handling all the shit the police don't want to deal with, like crime, merchants - in addition to having to pay taxes that presumably finance the police are now expected to stump up and hire their own security...

This is part of the overall strategy of police not involving themselves in things like vandalism and theft from automobiles ("You shouldn't have left valuables in your car..."). While there's no "official" policy try and report it and you'll discover pretty quickly this is not something they want to handle, it's a begrudging "IF YOU MUST WASTE OUR TIME....".

We're on a long and slippery slope...

You know you've failed when you have to write the test...

Looking for work, online, every employer has a little test they want you to do. Personality tests, which screen for possibly independent thoughts...logic tests..."skills assessment..." - read "Do you like to lick, suck or bite carrots when you find them on your plate.." or "It's our best customer. Do you bend over forwards or backwards?", the lists go on and on...

I remember applying once for Telus, a 500 question Personality Assessment and you know, just by virtue of the fact that you're jumping through their hoops, sitting through their test, that you've failed. Even if you qualify for the position, especially  if you qualify for the position, passing any large corporations personality assessment is as damning a confession of spiritual and moral abandonment that you could hope for...

But now, every job is a choice - financial bankruptcy or moral bankruptcy.

Meditate, jump through their hoops, answer their questions, every fucking one of them a hammer blow, a round nail being punched into a square hole, sooner or later...

YouTube: We gave you the problem, now want to sell you the solution

I'm growing a bit irate with YouTube, their whole "Buy a Subscription to remove the ads" strategy is pissing me off. A subscription for original content? Sure, why not. But monetizing each and every fucking video that goes online, then, after you've clicked past your 50th ad of the morning offering you a chance to upgrade to premium, without the ad, well, it's nothing short of insolence...It's not like they weren't making money, but greed always outs and 5 or 6 ads into a 60 minute video and I've had enough.

Google offers an interesting study, how a company grows from great ideals into the darkest of all possible dystopias, the same story with every tech startup (Apple included!!), how the desire to benefit users is perverted into the desire to make ever more money.

I'm glad I haven't thrown away my CD's...
