Best College Sex Ed Class ever cancelled

I never had a class this interesting in University. If they instead of cancelling it made it a regular feature I'm pretty sure enrollment would skyrocket. But that's just me.

Garage Sale Electronics

I should know better, but I can't resist a bargain.

The new wireless phone, picked up a garage sale to replace the phone downstairs, not working at all. Nada. The red light a little deception, the new and shiny appearance, yet when I pick it up there's nothing.

And there's the "new" portable stereo, that made sound briefly then none whatsoever. Also new, for no discernible reason.

And 3 iPods, not a single one of which doesn't have issues.

Before, once upon a time a long time ago, several sets of speaker (none of which worked...). But still I pick them up, garage sale technology and electronics, because when it does work it's a hell of a bargain...

Mother's Day - 2011

Countless phone calls the week prior, checking to see if we'll be open. We're not open, we're never open on Sunday, he tried it once, just for Mother's day and it wasn't worth the headache.

Still there are hundred's of calls.

On Friday night the owner takes the book home, takes every reservation that calls, he knows them all and they plead, Saturday night in lieu of Sunday will be a nightmare.

And it is. We have far more reservations than we do tables, far, far more, he's warned the hostess in his typical shriek that she should take every reservations that calls...She passes the phone to staff who turn them away. It's necessary.

By 6:30 there's an hour long line up at the door, irate customers wondering as to what the point of their reservation was, people are - justifiably - furious. Some refuse to wait, or grow tired of waiting, regular customers, and walk out.

Just another night in hell.

Garage Sales - Week 2 - 2011

Saturday up bright and early, singing "good morning" to the boy.

Image: Bell JarIt's garage sale day, week 2. And for today's choices we have a variety of possible destinations - stay in the City, there's a parade down in MacKenzie Lake, a couple of church sales. Or head out of town, there's parades of garage sales as well in Langdon and Chestermere Lake.

We decide upon Langdon.

I've never been, it's a small town about 30 minutes east of Calgary, and we arrive at around 8:00 to start our shopping.

There are plenty of garage sales. But after hitting a dozen, two dozen we realize it's going to be hopeless. Still we keep on; it's the same rubbish again and again, Bratz dolls, baby stuff, new Amway and Avon, everyone in Langdon, it would appear, is somehow involved in multi-level marketing. Not a single thing even slightly worth buying. Not a thing.

The boy sums it up: "It reminds me of one of those towns the US would build to test nuclear weapons..."

Eventually we give up, the final sale yielded me a few bell jars, beautiful, and a potted ivy, but the day overall is a complete writeoff.

***

Sunday it's the flea market, a stop at a garage sale on Memorial Drive, trinkets and baubles again, but not a single treasure. Some weeks will be like this, there are few enough weeks left, still there's some slight hope...
