BAAAAD ART
And, in the whirlwind tour I spotted this in a thrift shop:

There is so much wrong with it - and I'm not referring to the competence of the artist - that I can't even begin. But what really unnerves me is the familiarity of the woman - I know her from someplace - is it Sam from Sex and the City? Or someone I used to work with? I don't know but it haunts me in the worst of all possible ways...

Calgary police involved in revenge shooting
A few weeks ago I read about the incident in which a Calgary Police officer was investigating reports of a suspicious woman prowling peoples alleys, and upon investigation was pepper sprayed and then shot the suspect to death.
ASIRT is investigating, although the Police Forces response was in essence to absolve the officer and stand behind it's members.
Some notes:
#1 - The officer was in no immediate danger - she was in her car. Police officers are pepper-sprayed as part of their training. If she had presence of mind enough to get out of the car, aim - straight - and shoot the suspect to death she could have as well waited for back up or driven away. It's unlikely she received a full portion of pepper spray to the eyes or face or she would have been unable to see to shoot straight.
#2 - In light of the above the shooting becomes not a "rescuing the public" scenario, but a revenge killing.
#3 - Which, given the Calgary Police Forces track record, is perfectly acceptable and only awaits ASIRT's rubber stamp of approval.
On a final note, we pay for this. This is the kind of service any right minded member of the public would pay to lock up, not have armed and running about "enforcing" laws. The time is overdue...

The New Prospectors
Just a link to a topic of interest. Not exactly how I approach it, and while I scoff at a 4 ounce summer it's still 4 ounces better than I've ever done...

Last Whirlwind Tour
This is the last of the whirlwind tours of Calgary, the summer is in full swing and I won't be affording anymore days off until after the September Long Weekend. A dozen or so blog posts begun, but probably no time to complete them, and certainly not from my phone.
The trip back, 6 hours driving over the Gray Creek Pass, a record time on a washboard road, visit with the son and daughter, the quick - almost obligatory trip to go fossicking in Drumheller: The girl is the winner (again)!

Can you spot her treasure? A piece of bone on the left, another on the right and in the center:

A 2 inch long raptor tooth. And, about 18 inches to the right and out of frame another:

This one, about an inch long, but a thicker body than the last one we found. And, sliding down the hoodoo to check the bottom I make my big find of the day:

My raptor tooth (notice the serrations on the inside curve) - almost a full centimeter long!
Anyways, clearly the daughter won that expedition.
On the way out some little spots of amber in the dirt, beautiful orange and red but too degraded to do anything with:

And that's it. We escape the badlands just before a storm, back to Calgary, visit with the boy who's sick, bed, and now a few errands today before back towards work. So - I'll post a few things, the blog is not abandoned but will have to wait until I'm back a little more permanently in the fall. Prospecting - good, some finds, may hang in the Kootenays for September and October to wrap that up - but it depends a lot on my success, rent needs to be paid, and while the landlord is slow to accept his rent he's quick to point out if it's late...
